December 2009

One recent evening, I received a phone call from Becky Wright, the Home's Assistant Director. Becky explained to me that one of our children wanted me to attend a doctor's appointment with him the next day. The child was in considerable pain and was afraid to have the necessary procedure completed, but would have it done if I would go with him. He listened on speaker phone as I said that, of course, I would go with him.

While waiting for the procedure, the young man explained to me that he wanted to be at home for Christmas. Unfortunately, things weren't looking good for that to happen. We talked a bit about what happens at the Home during the holidays and, although it's really fun, it doesn't replace being at home.

As I stood beside the young man during the procedure, he very tightly held my hands and repeatedly thanked me for being there with him.

After the procedure, he and I went out to lunch at his new favorite restaurant. The conversation once again turned to the upcoming holidays. The young man and I talked about the activities that we have each Christmas and the gifts that each child receives. Although sadness could be heard in his voice, he shared with me how glad he was to be in a safe place where people really cared about him and his siblings. Maybe, he said, Christmas away from home wouldn't be so bad after all.

Your generosity, especially this year, has been remarkable. In a very tough economic year, you have made sure that the Home has received what is needed to take care of the children. When the children were in need of more, you responded. Thankfully, so many of you are working to ensure that the children will have the best Christmas possible.

It is through you that we see the true spirit of Christmas!
