March 2010
Recently, we had a sibling group arrive at the Home. When I looked at them, I saw children who appeared completely shell shocked and totally scared.
As it usually happens, some of the staff immediately began working with the children, while another staff member completed the admissions process with the case manager. Two of the first questions that the children are always asked are, "Are you hungry? Would you like something to eat?" This time, the children shyly looked at each other, and the oldest child indicated that they were hungry.
Maybe we were getting tired, or maybe it was the looks of complete defeat on the children's faces. This time, the simple response was the undoing of several of us.
I've noticed that our staff members have been keeping a really close eye on these children. Often, they just drop by the children's classrooms and cottage just to give them a hug or to see if they need anything. It's apparent that these children have struck a deep chord within the staff.
One night, I visited with the children in all of the cottages for awhile. As I walked into the cottage where the siblings live, I saw the smiles on their faces. They did not look like they were carrying the full weight of the world on their shoulders.
As I drove home, I prayed for all the children on our campus and for those out there who still carry the weight on their shoulders.
